Student View

  • Student View allows instructors to view their course as a student. This is helpful in structuring a course, creating exams, and checking what students can see.

To access Student View, click Go to Student View, found in the top right corner.

To exit Student View at anytime, click Back to Instructor View, found in a yellow horizontal bar at the top of the screen.

Instructors can view their course in General Student View or as a specific student. Under Viewing, click General Student View to view the page as a generic student. Click a specific students name from the dropdown menu to see what they would individually.

Note: These viewing options are only available on pages where student information is specific. Instructors cannot view an exam as a specific student. See below for more information.

Tip: Instructors can see a combined schedule of all of their course material in all of their courses while in student view. Go to Course List and then Combined Schedule.

Note: If an instructor wants to log in as a student in their class to see everything as a student would, they can create a fake student account at accounts.byu.edu. Then, the instructor must add that net ID as a Guest in their course. Click here for information on managing users. The instructor will then log into that account and navigate to the course.

  • Instructors can view assignments as individual students in their course. When doing this, instructors can submit assignments as one of their students.

    1. Under Home or BYU Grades, click Assignments.
    2. Click Go to Student View in the top right corner.
    3. Click dropdown to the right of Viewing to open a list of all students in the course.

  • Instructors cannot take exams for specific students. However, they may take an exam in general student view.

To take an exam in student view:

    1. Go to Exams.
    2. When in the Exam List, select Go to Student View in the top right corner.
    3. From the Exam List, click View for the exam you wish to take.
    Screen Shot 2022-02-09 at 5.02.19 PM.png

Note: By default, instructors will see exactly what the students will including time limit, attempts, and status. Beginning the exam from here will enforce all options created for students. To take the exam without those specific options, click View Page as Instructor. This view will give instructors unlimited attempts and an hour time limit by default, regardless of how long and what date the exam is scheduled for students. (If there is no time limit, the instructor will also have no time limit) This is a feature which allows instructors multiple attempts so they can design the exam to fit their expectations. Students will be given the exam based upon how the instructor scheduled it (date, time, time limit, etc).

    4. Then click on Begin Exam.

This will ONLY be available for exams that are published. This is because students cannot view unpublished exams. The results of this test run can be found in the Results tab (in Instructor View) and will be listed under the instructor's name. The instructor's score will not be pushed to BYU Grades, since it is merely for testing purposes.

Note: When professors/TAs take an exam in Student View, often an exception is created for them and they may see their name in the list of exceptions for the exam, but this is nothing to worry about.
