Create Path

  • Learning Path allows for instructors to create a linear workload for their classes, allowing students to progress forward based on completion of prior tasks.

Note: In order to set up Learning Path properly, ALL of the course material needs to be set up and implemented prior to starting a Learning Path.

Once you are in your course and click the Path tab, you have three options:

    • Use Path
    • Use External Link
    • Do not include Learning Path

    Use Learning Path
Select the Use Learning Path radio button. Select if you would like to show Due Dates. Select which tabs students in your course will see (some tabs cannot be disabled). Click Save and Continue to begin using Learning Path.

Note: Tabs that are unchecked and greyed out cannot be set up because you have not set these features up outside of path. Items that are checked and greyed out cannot be turned off.

    Link to another website
Select the Link to another website radio button. Enter the URL of the external website in the textbox. Click Link to verify the URL. Click Save and Continue. A link to the website will appear to students when they click on the Path tab.

    Do not include Learning Path
If you do not wish to use Learning Path or another website, click on the Do not include Learning Path radio button. Click Save and Continue. The Path tab will not appear for students in your course.

  • Learning Path takes existing course content and groups the material into units and activities.

A general outline of creating path:

    1. Ensure all of your course material is set up in Learning Suite. This includes all assignments and exams.

    2. Create Units to add structure. A Unit is a discrete section of the class that contains similar activities. For example, if there are six different concepts the class needs to learn, a professor may consider setting up six units for the course.

For more help creating and setting up units, please see below.

    3. Now add activities to each unit and set completion rules. Activities are the content that is inside of units, and will contain all the assignments and exams that you have set up in your normal Learning Suite course.

  • Learning Path uses Units to group together Activities. Units are the backbone of the course and provide the structure for linear progression.

    1. Under Path, click on +Unit.

    2. A dialog window will appear.

    • Enter a Title for the Unit.
    • Add an Objective, or an explanation of what the unit will cover.
    • (Optional) Add a Suggested Completion Date, which will add a reminder to the calendar to show students where they should be in the course. When finished, click Save.

    3. Add Release Rules to the unit to ensure it is not released until certain units are done and/or before a certain date. For more help on Release Rules, see below.

    4. You will need to add Completion Rules to your unit if you want to require its completion before a student can move forward to the next unit. For more help on Completion Rules, see below.

    5. Click on the Published toggle switch when unit is completed. To change the order of units, click and hold the unit and drag it to the desired location in Path.

Note: Once a unit is published, it cannot be edited until it is unpublished. Unpublish the unit by clicking the published toggle.

  • Instructors can set release rules for individual units. These include locking a unit until a certain date and time as well as setting prerequisites for the unit.

    1. Under Path, click on the pencil icon.

    2. Click on Release Rules. Select Lock Until. This will lock the unit until the determined date and time. Once you have set a Locked Until date the assignment will show as locked.

    3. Select Prerequisites. This will give you the option of selecting which Units the students must complete before the Unit will be unlocked for them.

There are three options of prerequisites:

    • Previous unit: requires the unit just before this Unit to be completed before it will unlock
    • All previous units: requires all units created before this unit to be completed before unlocking
    • Select specific unit: requires only the selected unit to be completed before this one will unlock

  • Due to Learning Path being a linear based learning system, Completion Rules are required to make sure required assignments are completed before a student can move on.

Under Path, instructors can either add completion rules during the unit creation process or edit an already completed unit that has not been published yet.

    1. Click the pencil icon on the unit to edit. Select Completion Rules.

Note: You must have Activities in the Unit in order to have Completion Rules. For help adding Activities, click here.

    2. Select the dropdown for Completion Type and select one of three options:

    • Select Required: A list of activities to select will appear. Choose whether or not activities must be completed sequentially, as well as which activities must be completed to finish the unit.
      • You can require the students to complete the requirements in the order they are listed. Select the Activities you would like to be required by checking next to their titles, edit the Activity level Completion Criterion using the dropdown next to the Activity Title. When you are finished making changes to this page, select Save.
    • Require (x) of (y) activities: A list of all activities in the unit will appear. Edit the Completion Criterion and select the activities that are required. Enter how many (x) of the selected activities (y) are needed for completion. Save when finished.
    • None: This will make the unit not required to complete.
