Student Performance Indicators
Using Learning Suite to find students who might need help
Grades > Scores
Interpreting Overall Scores
The Overall score column on the Scores page displays the total points a student has been awarded thus far, along with a percentage which represents how well they are doing based on the assignments that have been scored for that student.
Example: In the image below, Laura has a 95.5% and 253.0 points. Compare that to Halle who has only 163.0 points but is actually higher, at 98.5%. This happens when missing assignments are not given a 0 score; unscored assignments are not included in the denominator when we calculate the %.
In the case above, it is potentially detrimental to Halle that the instructor has not given her 0 scores for her unsubmitted assignments. She may have a false sense of success and you as an instructor may miss the fact that she may need help.
Pro Tip: 1) Consider inputting 0 scores for assignments that are not turned in at the due date. You can always change the grade later if they submit later. There is an auto zero function in the Setup page or you can enter a default score of 0 manually for each assignment.
2) Click on the header for the Overall score column and sort by points. This would allow you to see students who have lower points and would give you a better idea of their performance than relying on percentage alone.
Grades > Scores
You also have view options on the Scores page that can help you find assignments which might be problematic for students.
Display Score options
Click the “Display” dropdown to choose footers that will appear across the bottom of your scores. The footer information can help you spot an assignment with a high number of missing scores, assignments with lower than expected average scores, etc.
Flag Low Overall Scores
You can also flag low Overall scores and use it to identify, sort by, and communicate with students below a certain threshold.
Click the Overall score header and choose “Flag low scores” from the dropdown list. You will get a popup where you can set the flag %. It will tell you how many students (if any) are currently below that threshold.
Click “Apply” to create the flag. Click the envelope for options to email or message the students. If you chose apply but still want to email students, choose “Email students” from the dropdown menu and the flagged students will be one of the options.
After applying the flag, the Scores page will indicate a low score based on your settings.
You can filter by these low scores by clicking on the “Filter” drop down menu above the scores table. Checking that box will remove any non-flagged students from the Scores page.
Find High-Scoring Students
You can also find the high-scoring students by clicking on the column header for Overall Score and sorting the column on score, high to low. Click on the envelope by their name to send them an email or internal Message.
Flag Individual Assignments
You can flag specific assignments for low scores in the same way.
Click on the header for an assignment and choose the “Flag low scores” option
You will get a popup where you can set the flag %. It will tell you how many students (if any) are currently below that threshold.
Click “Apply” to create the flag. Click the envelope for options to email or message the students. If you chose apply but still want to email students, choose “Email students” from the dropdown menu and the flagged students will be one of the options.
After applying the flag, the Scores page will indicate a low score. Note that the unscored student is not flagged – this is why entering a 0 for missing assignments can be important in identifying students who are struggling.
Find High-Scoring Students
You can also find the high-scoring students by clicking on the column header for the assignment and sorting the column on score, high to low. Click on the envelope by their name to send them an email or internal Message.
Grades > Scores
You can also view your overall statistics for the entire course or by individual assignment.
Click on the Overall score header (or the header for one of your assignments) and select “View statistics”
You’ll get a popup with a breakdown of the course overall statistics (or the specific assignment statistics) including average GPA/score, standard deviation, median score, high and low scores, quartiles, etc.

You can copy here whatever content gets created for the Exam Results section, which would include the Exam Summary information as well as the Exam Activity (the little person icon)
Individual Student Performance Comparison Options
Instructors and TAs can switch to Student View to see how a specific student is performing on any particular assignments as well as their overall class standing. This method is also helpful when doing one-on-one consultations with students.
Click on the “Go to Student View” link, found in the upper right corner of Learning Suite.
Navigate to the Grades tab, which will default to the Assignments page while in student view. Choose the student’s name from the dropdown list at the top of the page.
The assignment statistics, indicated by the arrow, will show how this student scored on the assignment when compared to the other student scores for that assignment.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Current Progress and Total Course Progress grades for this student. The Current Progress statistics icon will show you how this student’s current overall grade compares to other students in the course.
You can also use the What If Calculator for a student to see what their final grade might be if they get a certain score on remaining assignments or exams.
Click on Go to Student View and navigate to the Grades tab. On the left navigation, click on “What If Calculator” to access this feature. Choose a student from the dropdown list.
The What If Calculator will automatically populate the scores with all currently scored assignments and exams. Entering in possible scores for the remaining assignments and exams will give you a calculation at the bottom of the page that displays a potential final grade for the student based on the possible scores entered in.
